Miraculous Grammar

Unmask the Secrets of the Story

A deep reading of Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir as myth, moral architecture, and narrative restraint.

It’s Not a Kid’s Show

(Even though it pretends to be)

Miraculous is not the kids’ show it pretends to be. It’s definitely appropriate for kids, but these are not writers fulfilling the bare minimum necessary to entertain children—and it is unbelievable, utterly unbelievable, that the layers of meaning they included were accidental.

Warning: This site contains spoilers. It’s not possible to do a serious close reading while tiptoeing around plot details. The Author has opted not to try.

What This Site Is (and Isn’t)

This is

A close reading

Myth, philosophy, narrative structure, and symbolism all converge in Miraculous. This site pokes the underbrush a bit, just to see what’s actually living in there.
This is

A meandering wander

While The Author has spent many years in the academy and holds an advanced degree, no promise is made of a single, tidy thesis. This isn’t the time to win an argument. It’s a time to wander through the text, follow patterns, and pull threads from wherever they lead.

This is

A quiet conversation

I invite you to pull up a chair, pour your favorite drink, and read my work. Let’s talk about it. Tell me if you think I’ve missed something or if you’d like to chat and dig deeper into one of the threads. I would like nothing more than for this to be a fireside chat long into the night.
This is not

A fandom wiki

This is not the place for episode summaries, shipping charts, lore cataloging. That’s elsewhere. I wanted a deeper dive.

I may summarize episodes or arcs as part of my articles, but that is not the central point.

The Method to My Madness

Organization

This site won’t pretend to build one airtight argument. It’s a notebook, not a courtroom. Here are a few of the shapes the work will usually take—drawing on literature, philosophy, theology, and whatever else proves unexpectedly relevant.

  • Character sketches
  • Major arcs and thematic reflections
  • Close readings of key scenes
  • Motifs, symbols, and recurring patterns
  • Comparisons to other mythic/literary works
  • Whatever thread insists on being followed next

Motifs and Themes

Before finally deciding to start this project, I had a lot of themes already picked out. These are the threads you can expect to see me pull as we get underway—but there will be more.
  • The nature of evil and redemption
  • The cost of vocation
  • When love turns selfish
  • Symbolic Restraint

Links and Connections

Here are some of the connections from art and literature that I have started playing with before beginning this project. As time goes on, they’ll be incorporated into my writing here along with whatever else occurs to me.
  • Les Miserables
  • Middle Earth (including much of Tolkein’s corpus)
  • Doctor Who
  • Buffy the Vampire Slayer
  • Ragtime
  • Classical Myth
